And to reverse that audio.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It may actually be creepier when played forward. The festival, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.moviemaker.com\/50-film-festivals-worth-the-entry-fee-2025\/\">one of our favorites<\/a>, was also the one to premiere <em>Skinamarink<\/em>, which used online fascination to build into a major hit, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.moviemaker.com\/skinamarinks-budget-kyle-edward-ball\/\">despite a mere $10,000 budget.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The Undertone<\/em> hopes to similarly overperform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The film, which will play the <a href=\"https:\/\/festival.sundance.org\/program\/film\/6932f932bd86515aba60f499\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sundance Film Festival at a midnight screening<\/a> later this month, follows the host of a popular paranormal podcast who becomes haunted by terrifying recordings that are mysteriously sent to her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As Sundance explains, &#8220;Strained by the responsibility of providing end-of-life care to her dying mother, Evy (Nina Kiri) seeks respite from the loneliness of her fragmented reality. Now living in a house full of sentimental keepsakes and memories, her sanity and structure lies within her work on a supernatural podcast, <em>The Undertone<\/em>. While she usually plays skeptic to the creepy (and often disturbing) audio files sent to her by co-host Justin (Adam DiMarco) for podcast fodder, the latest submission hits differently. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;A series of 10 unheard recordings from a young pregnant couple are unfurled one by one, each more ominous than the last,&#8221; the Sundance summary continues. &#8220;As Evy draws parallels to her current plight, hidden messages manifest, pushing her further toward madness.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2025\/08\/the-undertone-a24-acquires-ian-tuason-horror-movie-1236483805\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Deadline <\/em>reported<\/a> in August that A24 acquired the film in a bidding war, &#8220;and that the deal was for mid-7 figures.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In her Fantasia Fest description of the film, programming director Carolyn Mauricette wrote, \u201cFans of SKINAMARINK and I AM THE PRETTY THING WHO LIVES IN THE HOUSE will love this slow-burn nightmare that will make hackles on your neck rise and your blood chill.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The film&#8217;s eerie marketing campaign has also drawn comparisons to those of <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.moviemaker.com\/weapons-unlisted-video-zach-cregger\/\">Weapons<\/a><\/em> and <em><a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/counterarts\/longlegs-a-masterclass-in-horror-movie-marketing-43987eb0b53e\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Longlegs<\/a><\/em>, the latter of which came from <em>I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House<\/em> director <a href=\"https:\/\/www.moviemaker.com\/osgood-perkins-longlegs-anthony-perkins\/\">Osgood Perkins.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Main image: Nina Kiri appears in undertone by Ian Tuason, an official selection of the 2026 Sundance Film Festival.
